The Kentucky Retired Teachers Association (KRTA) is an 18,000-member organization that represents the interests of Kentucky’s Retired Teachers.
From 2007-2016, Kentucky’s Teacher Retirement System (TRS) was grossly underfunded by the Kentucky General Assembly making it one of the worst funded pension systems in the United States.
Staring down a large unfunded liability, Kentucky’s politicians sought a bailout of its obligations by proposing cuts in cost-of-living adjustments, a reduction in benefits, and an elimination of the defined benefits system.
Per this agreement, Strategic Advisers did the following:
- Developed a comprehensive communications and grassroots strategy.
- Developed an advocacy campaign entitled “Teach Frankfort to Pay Their Debts” (https://www.teachfrankfort.org).
- Established website, teacher testimonials, a system for contacting elected officials, email communications, earned media including radio and television appearances, op-eds, letters to the editor, etc.
- No reduction in benefits for retired teachers and cost of living adjustments preserved.
- Full-funding of TRS pension system since 2016.
- Generated more than 30,000 emails and phone calls to elected officials.
- KRTA is recognized as an advocacy force in Frankfort.
